Oga no Namahage 男鹿のナマハゲ Akita (Dec.)
Oga no Namahage takes place on New Year’s Eve, and participants dressed as namahage demons walk around residences shouting “Are there any children here who are crying and aren’t listening to their parents?” For locals, namahage are visiting deities who warn against laziness and pray for good health. Although areas holding this event had been decreasing in recent years due to shortages of people to carry on its traditions, it has been showing signs of revitalization due to its registration on the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. (It is a nationally designated intangible folk cultural property.)
