Take no Nobori

Take no Nobori Nagano (July)

Take no Nobori is a festival that has been held since the Muromachi period in order to pray for rain. It is said to have started when villagers wove pieces of cloth and offered these to a mountain deity in order to express their appreciation. Over 100 local residents take turns carrying banners about 6 m long during a parade that runs from the peak of Mt. Okami-dake (about 1,250 m), through a hot spring town to Bessho-jinja Shrine. There is also dancing in which girls wearing flowered conical hats beat together bamboo sticks, and a lion dance featuring young persons.
