Futamado no Shinmeisai

Futamado no Shinmeisai Hiroshima (Feb.)

Futamado no Shinmeisai is a fire festival with about 400 years of history. An approximately 20 m tall figure of a deity, called Shinmei-san, is built out of bamboo and pine, and then this is elaborately decorated with large amounts of colored paper, etc. The figure is paraded around by men, and is set alight in the evening. The attendees then face toward the flame, put their hands together, and pray for good health, safety from fire, and safety for households during the coming year.
