Ashibetsu Kenka Yamakasa 芦別健夏山笠 Hokkaido (July)
Ashibetsu Kenka Yamagasa started when young persons enthralled with the “Hakata Gion Yamakasa” festival decided to start a similar festival that would “bring people together” in their own town. During the event, it is traditional for attendees to stop by a giant yew tree called “Kogane Mizumatsu” that has long been regarded by the Ainu as sacred, in order to pray for the good health of citizens. The original festival recognizes this festival to be its only “sibling” in the entire country.
