Takahama Shichinen Matsuri 高浜七年祭 Fukui (June)
Takahama Shichinen Matsuri is the shikinen taisai, a regular grand matsuri, of Sakichi Shrine. It is held once every six years. A ceremony is held to appease the deity responsible for illness, and vengeful spirits, and three mikoshi (portable shrines) carrying the deity are taken to a temporary resting place for seven days. There is a parade of floats from each region, and all around the town, varied performances are held, such as sword dancing, rice planting and kagura (sacred music and dance). Finally, the mikoshi are taken along the coast, and the spirits are returned to the sea in the “ashi arai” feet washing ritual.
