Shiranuka Itsukushima Jinja Reitaisai 白糠 厳島神社例大祭 Hokkaido (July)
Shiranuka Itsukushima Jinja Reitaisai is the annual grand matsuri of Itsukushima Shrine in Shiranuka-cho, Hokkaido, which received the deity of Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima around 200 years ago. People pray for bumper crops and safety at sea as the mikoshi (portable shrine) is paraded for 30 km around the town. The mikoshi is carried at waist height, and the unique carrying method, called chizuri, in which the carriers proceed as if crawling along the ground, is a sight to see. The climax is the thrilling mikoshi transferal, when it is taken to the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean and pushed into the water dynamically, to be purified.
