Miyoshi Bondensai

Miyoshi Bondensai Akita (Jan.)

Miyoshi Bondensai is the annual matsuri of Taiheizan Miyoshi Shrine. It is held on January 17th. Each residents’ association, and companies and organizations offer Bonden (objects containing a divine spirit), to pray for bumper crops, the wellbeing of families and success in business. The event is also called “Kenka Bonden” (battling Bonden), because everyone competes roughly, in an attempt to get to the front. This day, in the middle of winter in Akita, heats up with the energy of the men in the crowd.
