Hiyoshi Sannosai

Hiyoshi Sannosai Shiga (Apr.)

Hiyoshi Sannosai is a dynamic matsuri with a history of over 1200 years. The origins of the enshrinement of the deities is recreated with mikoshi, or portable shrines, and people pray for peace, and bumper crop harvests. Seven mikoshi participate during the matsuri period. Many historic scenes unfold, including the carrying of mikoshi down from the summit of Mt. Hachioji in the Uma-no-Shinji ritual, the Yoimiya Otoshi Shinji ritual, in which gods are born, and the Funatogyo, in which mikoshi are transferred across Lake Biwa.
