Hagurosan Bonten Matsuri

Hagurosan Bonten Matsuri Tochigi (Nov.)

The Bonten Matsuri of Hagurosan Shrine is held to pray for bumper crop harvests and good health. It has continued since the mid-Edo period. People carry rods which are two connected poles of moso bamboo topped with colorful tassels. They represent the deity Bonten. The people raise the "Bonten" up to the sky as they parade through the town. They ascend the harsh shrine approach of Hagurosan while shouting powerfully, and at the shrine at the summit, they offer up around 20 "Bonten".
