Awa Odori

Awa Odori Tokushima (Aug.)

Awa-odori dance has a history of over 400 years. It is a display of the common people’s spirit, which is known from a line of a song sung during the dance – “Dancing fool, watching fool: all are fools, so let's all dance!” It is held in Tokushima City for four days, during which the streets are full of colorful dancers. The dancers move to the zomeki rhythm of the gongs and drums and perform their unique way of dancing which they have perfected through practice. As they dance, they release all their energy.
