Nioryu Matsuri 仁尾竜まつり Kagawa (Aug.)
Nioryu Matsuri is a ceremony to pray for rain in Nio-cho, Kagawa Prefecture, which has long been troubled by droughts. Every August, more than 200 people carry a giant straw dragon over which water is poured. The dragon is 35 m in length and weighs 3 t. The local people start making the dragon a few months before the event. The matsuri ceased for a time, but was revived by people wishing to preserve the traditional folk ritual of the region.
