Mitsuke Tenjin Hadaka Matsuri

Mitsuke Tenjin Hadaka Matsuri Shizuoka (Sept.)

Mitsuke Tenjin Hadaka Matsuri is centered on the ritual of the transferal of the enshrined deity of Yanahime Shrine to Omikunitama Shrine, which enshrines several gods of Totomi Province, the old name for western Shizuoka Prefecture. The oni (demon) dance held on the evening of the matsuri is famous. Men, wearing only straw around their waists, parade through the Mitsuke area, and dance wildly in the worship hall of Yanahime Shrine. This soul-stirring event makes the matsuri worthy of the name “bizarre festival of the world”. (It is a nationally designated intangible folk cultural property.)
