Honensai/Furugen no Miminme

Honensai/Furugen no Miminme Okinawa (May)

Honensai/Furugen no Miminme is a traditional ritual with a history of around 200 years. It is said to have been transmitted from Shuri to the Ozato Furugen region of Nanjo City to pray for bumper crop harvests and the prosperity of descendants. With the Bodhisattva Maitreya and a vertical flag at the front, dancing children form a procession through the places of worship and the village. The dancing children who sing "Miminme" while holding their earlobes are cute and bring vitality to the region. The ritual is also an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Nanjo City.
