Hassaku Matsuri

Hassaku Matsuri Kumamoto (Sept.)

Hassaku Matsuri has a history of over 250 years. It has been held on Hassaku day (1st day of the 8th month according to the old calendar) when the harvest is set, to give thanks to the deity of rice fields and harvests and to pray for bumper crops. The highlight of the matsuri is the parade of large objects. These objects, some with a height of 4 m, create a spectacular sight. The objects are made by different groups, who use wild bamboo, pampas grass and palm tree bark, and try to outdo the others with their workmanship.
