Yamanashioka Jinja Azumaya-gu Shunki Reitaisai 山梨岡神社 吾妻屋宮 春季例大祭 Yamanashi (Apr.)
This is the annual spring matsuri of Yamanashioka Shrine, from which the name of the prefecture is said to be derived. The highlight is the Daidai kagura, which is an Intangible Cultural Property of the prefecture. After the early morning ritual on April 4th, 24 varieties of dance are performed until around 10pm. In particular, the lively and heroic “Shiken-no-mai” dance is said to have been performed as an offering to pray for success when Takeda Shingen headed for battle. There are currently 30 parishioners involved in the kagura, and they are called “maiko”. The tradition has been carefully preserved.
