Aoi Matsuri

Aoi Matsuri Kyoto (May)

Aoi Matsuri is one of Kyoto's three great matsuri. It is said to have begun one thousand and several hundred years ago. A procession of over 5,000 people wearing splendid Heian period clothing departs from Kyoto Imperial Palace. They head along the Miyako-oji main road through the new greenery to Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine. The Saio-dai, riding a palanquin and dressed in a 12-layered ceremonial robe, looks particularly outstanding. The elegant atmosphere of the re-creation of the Heian period charms onlookers.
