Tabayama-mura Gion Matsuri Sasara Shishimai 丹波山村 祇園祭 ささら獅子舞 Yamanashi (July)
Tabayama-mura Gion Matsuri Sasara Shishimai has a history of 300 years. It dates from the Edo period. Along with the lions, people wearing hats adorned with flowers and carrying musical instruments called sasara, and people with swords parade around the village to a musical accompaniment, and perform a dance at shrines in each area. The dance has a story, and one of the highlights is the scene in which the three lions dance aggressively. The tradition continues to be passed down, with the youths of the cultural property preservation society taking the lead in reviving programs which had ceased to be performed.
