Sendai Otsunahiki

Sendai Otsunahiki Kagoshima (Sept.)

Sendai Otsunahiki began as a way to boost morale among the Shimazu army in the Battle of Sekigahara. It has a history of over 400 years. The rope used is around 365 meters long, weighs approximately 7 tons and has a diameter of about 40 cm. It is Japan's largest tug-of-war rope, and is made especially for this event. Around 3,500 men battle fiercely as they pray for prosperity in business and bumper crop harvests. The main feature is the fight in the center between the "oshitai," a group of pushers, who try to obstruct the pullers of the opposing sides.
