Kumano Hayatama Taisha Mifune Matsuri 熊野速玉大社 御船祭 Wakayama (Oct.)
Kumano Hayatama Taisha Mifune Matsuri has been held at the World Heritage Site Kumano Hayatama Taisha for over one thousand and several hundred years. The deity is transferred by boat in a ritual which recreates the visit by the gods of Kumano. The vermillion-painted shinkosen carrying the object of worship, the morotobune, and saishusen boats row around Mifune-jima island, and the accompanying nine hayabune boats race each other. It is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
