Kugushi Benten Matsuri

Kugushi Benten Matsuri Fukui (July)

Kugushi Benten Matsuri is dedicated to the deity Benten, who is worshipped at Munakata Shrine. The shrine stands on a cape along the coast at Kugushi, Mihama-cho and protects the area. Youths transfer the mikoshi, which contains the deity, from the shrine to a boat and across the sea. The deity rests in a temporary place in the village, where it is worshipped overnight, and the next day it is returned to the shrine by boat. As a form of entertainment which is said to please the deity, the youths wrestle with each other in the boat which is adorned with colorful banners, and roughly throw each other into the sea.
