Yama-age Matsuri 山あげ祭 Tochigi (July)
Yama-age Matsuri is one of the largest outdoor Kabuki dance performances in Japan. A large-scale stage set with a depth of 100 meters is constructed on the road, and the locals dance in time to songs with Tokiwazu shamisen accompaniment. The stage backdrops, which change to suit the program, and the sight of the perfectly coordinated movements of the youths are not to be missed. The raising of the Oyama mountain scenery backdrop, which stands over 10 meters in height, is another highlight, and is the origin of the matsuri.
