Miyauchi Kumano no Shishi Matsuri

Miyauchi Kumano no Shishi Matsuri Yamagata (July)

Miyauchi Kumano no Shishi Matsuri is the annual matsuri of Kumano Taisha Shrine in Miyauchi, Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture. It is held every July to pray for bumper crop harvests. In the matsuri, a huge mikoshi (shrine float) weighing over 400 kilograms is paraded through the streets to enthusiastic shouts. In the shrine grounds, the Shishi Bayoi, in which parishioners scramble to grab Oshida surrounding the shishi lion's head, takes place, filling the area with excitement and cheers.
