Matsumae Jinja Reitaisai

Matsumae Jinja Reitaisai Hokkaido (Aug.)

Matsumae Jinja Reitaisai is also called Oshiro Kagura as it used to be held in the castle of the former Matsumae domain. In the Edo period, the matsuri flourished due to the enthusiasm of the shrine priests, and it spread to other areas including the southern part of Hokkaido, and the Sea of Japan coastal areas. Even today, the priests of each shrine unite, and hold kagura performances at the annual matsuri of their shrines.
