Iba no Sakakudashi Matsuri

Iba no Sakakudashi Matsuri Shiga (May)

Iba no Sakakudashi Matsuri has a history of over 850 years. It is held every May in the Iba district of Higashiomi City in Shiga Prefecture, and is one of Omi’s unusual rituals. A large group of young men haul three mikoshi (shrine floats) down the steep rocky slope from Sanposan Shrine at the summit of Mt. Kinugasa, to the large torii gate at the foot of the mountain. With a disregard for danger, the men of Iba cut brave, daring and appealing figures in this spring matsuri.
