Horinouchi Jugoya Matsuri 堀之内十五夜まつり Niigata (Sept.)
Horinouchi Jugoya Matsuri is held on August 15th according to the old lunar calendar. It is the autumn festival of Hachimangu, the local shrine of Horinouchi. It has a history of over 300 years, with records beginning in 1691. Long ago, Horinouchi flourished as a post-station town. Its people have long been fond of matsuri, and it is said that they adopted the matsuri culture of Kyoto and other places. On the eve of the first day of the festival, people receive sacred wands from the shrine, and on the last day of the festival they offer them to the Uono River.
