Dazaifu Tenmangu Jinkoshiki Taisai

Dazaifu Tenmangu Jinkoshiki Taisai Fukuoka (Sept.)

Dazaifu Tenmangu Jinkoshiki Taisai is the largest matsuri of Fukuoka Prefecture’s Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, which is visited by around seven million people annually. This shrine is dedicated to Sugawara Michizane, the god of learning, who died in this area. The matsuri is held to pray for the divine will of Michizane and to give thanks for bumper crop harvests. A mikoshi (shrine float) carrying the deity is taken to Enokisha Shrine where Michizane once lived, and then it is returned to Dazaifu Tenmangu. It is protected by around 500 parishioners dressed in Heian period clothing.
