Yamanokami Matsuri 山の神祭り Yamaguchi (Jan.)
Yamanokami Matsuri is held in the small mountain village of Shimizu once every five years. It is a primitive ritual, in which the villagers welcome ancestral spirits to the forest for protection and to pray for a bumper harvest. Records of this simple, solemn and unusual tradition, in which a holy tree is worshipped as a deity in a sacred forest, date back to the Kamakura period. It is registered as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Yamaguchi Prefecture.
