Ushigoe Matsuri

Ushigoe Matsuri Miyazaki (July)

Ushigoe Matsuri is a traditional ritual held at Sugawara Shrine to pray for the good health of livestock and a bumper harvest. Held at the end of the busy farming season, it is an unusual event in which cattle jump over logs raised 50cm from the ground. It has a history of over 400 years, and around 20 cows participate in the ritual each year.
