Saidaiji Eyo

Saidaiji Eyo Okayama (Feb.)

Saidaiji Eyo, also called Hadaka (Naked) Matsuri, is a curious event. It is said to have started around 500 years ago when charms distributed by the temple were said to bring good fortune. As the temple was flooded with people trying to get these charms, the priest had no choice but to throw them to the people. The charms are two sacred sticks called Shingi, and in the matsuri, 9,000 semi-naked men seeking happiness fight furiously over the sticks.
