Nechiyamadera no Ennen Otetekomai

Nechiyamadera no Ennen Otetekomai Niigata (Aug.)

Nechiyama-dera no Ennen is performed in the Nechiyama-dera settlement. It is Niigata Prefecture’s only ennen (temple performance) event. It is steeped in the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism, and comprises ten dances. One of these dances, “Otetekomai” is widely known as the generic name for the matsuri. As the Otetekomai lyrics contain words from songs of Muromachi era (1338 - 1573), it can be said to have been transmitted to the region at least 500 years ago.
