Munakata Taisha Okitsugu Genchi Taisai Fukuoka (May)

Okinoshima is the island where the eldest of the Munakata Sanjosin goddesses is enshrined. Usually, a priest is stationed on the island for ten days at a time. Once a year, on the day of the matsuri, approximately 230 men are allowed to travel to the island, which is itself considered to be an object of worship. It is a mysterious island, which retains certain rules, including the prohibition of women, and purification rituals performed in the sea. 80,000 articles have been unearthed on the island, and are designated as national treasures by the country. Here, one can see the origin of belief.
