Kuromori Kabuki

Kuromori Kabuki Yamagata (Feb.)

Kuromori Kabuki has been performed for over 270 years in the Kuromori area of Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture. It is folk kabuki, and is performed during the lunar New Year matsuri at Hie Shrine on February 15th and 17th. The audience sits outdoors, and the plays performed as heavy snow falls are called “plays in the snow” or “plays in the cold”. It is the country’s leading folk kabuki event in terms of the number of items on the program and the scale of the event.
