Koyomai to Kamizumo

Koyomai to Kamizumo Oita (Oct.)

Koyomai and Kamizumo is held once every three years on October 12th, at Koyo Shrine, Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture. The dance and sumo wrestling are performed by puppets. After the offering of the Koyomai dance, which is performed to music played on flutes and drums, the gods split into two sides - east and west, for bouts of sumo. The humorous movements of the puppets and the ever-changing developments thrill the spectators. It is a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
