Kazusa Junisha Matsuri 上総十二社祭り Chiba (Sept.)
Kazusa Junisha Matsuri has a history of over 1200 years. The goddess Tamayori-hime-no-mikoto from Kazusa no Kuni Ichinomiya Tamasaki Shrine is taken to Tsurigasaki coast once a year to meet other gods from the same family. It is Boso’s oldest Hamaori ritual, in which the mikoshi (shrine float) is taken into the sea. Over 1,000 semi-naked youths carry nine mikoshi, which bear the related gods, and rush along the sea at Kujukuri Beach, heading for Tsurigasaki, the venue of the matsuri.
