Hokkai Heso Matsuri 北海へそ祭り Hokkaido (July)
Hokkai Heso Matsuri is the regular grand matsuri of Hokushin Shrine in Furano City. Hokushin Shrine is known as Heso Shrine, and is located right in the center of Hokkaido. It has been held since 1969. The main draw of the matsuri is the Zubara-odori dance. It is a unique dance, in which participants draw pictures of faces on their stomachs which resemble people. However, by emphasizing the point below the navel, where physical and mental strength is focused, it expresses the spirit of cutting down large trees and cultivating the land when the primeval forest was being developed.
